I was fortunate to visit Sicily in May for the first time. It is beautiful. I visited the house that belonged to my great-great grandmother. You can watch the sun set over the sea sitting on the rooftop.

All four of my grandparents were from Sicily. My mother's parents were both from Palermo-grandmother's surname was Mecurio and grandfather's name was Rizzo. My father's parents were from Balestrate. My grandmother's surname was Russo and my grandfather's Ales. No one ever believes me that name is Sicilian.

I started to laugh about the language. When I was a kid, I would order basta from the restaurant and the waitress thought I was an idiot. Saturday I ordered ricotta and the store owner corrected me with "you mean rigotta".

I'm very proud of my Sicilian heritage and can't wait to go back. Thank you so much for putting this site together!

Ciao!
Donna (Donato)

I thank you for this website. I believe it's very important to preserve the Sicilian language. It was the language that I learned (and have since forgotten) from my chidhood. I have recently returned from a visit to Sicilia with a desire to relearn my ancestors native tongue.

I have just read many pages of your beautifully pages. I can hardly breath right now. I've just had a fabuloso trip to Sicily. What I didn't read I saved so I could read at my leisure. You, Mr. Russo are an extremely talented writer. Thank you for the time you have spent educating and enlightening us. I am only one quarter Sicilian. My Grandfather and Grandmother were the Sicilians - Palermo. I'm trying to find out from where - I'm pretty sure Carini. Grandfather was a Sansone. Someone told me that was like "Smith" in the US. Happy Christmas.

Salve,

I am in the process of recovering the Sicilian language. I had forgotten I knew it, but I learned it with English. I have sought out and met 100 relatives from Sicily and I study Sicilian; however, I am illiterate in it!! It's very difficult.

My relatives immediately knew who I was because my grandmother had kept in touch and sent them things during the depression and the second war, and they welcomed me as one of the family. I visit them once or twice a year. The biggest problem I perceive is that my relatives in Sicily don't like my speaking Sicilian. They correct me to Italian. I feel the language is disappearing, being killed by its own speakers.

Best wishes to Sicilians!!

My family speak the Abbruzzese dialect (which is VERY similar to the Sicilianu), the Calabrese, and the Sicilianu. They all understand eachother even though they speak different dialects. I speak a mixture of the three being raised around it my whole life. My nunnu says all the people of Southern Italy can basically understand eachother. I speak the dialect as my 1st language and didn't start to learn English untill I was 5. I was born in Pescara, Abbruzzu, and I came to America with my parents when I was 3.

Durin the 12th century, this family ruled over several castles in the regions around Siena and Volterra. The Russo family branced out all over northern and central Italy, settling in the cities of Trento, Udine, Vicenza, Venice, Savigliano, Pisa, Ravenna, and Rome. Some of the family migrated as far south as Sicily. This southern branch of the family descended from Count Ugone Rosso of Sicily, whose ancestors were Normans.

Tuscany, the family's northern birthplace, became fragmented in the 12th century as a result of the strugle between the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire.

The earlies coat of arms of the family Russo is: A silver sheild with a red lion (standing on its rear legs).

Research into the surname Russo has produced evidence of the early origins of the name in Florence, where it originated in Lombardic times (approx. the 8th century). The surname Russo has such variations as Rosso, Rossa, Rossi, Del Rosso, De Rossi, De Russi, Lo Russo, Lorusso, La Russa, Larussa, Rosselli, Rossello, Rossellini, Ruggiu, Ruiu, Ruju, Rubiu, Rossillo, Rossetto, Rossit, Rossini, Rossitti, Rossitto, Rossotto, Russotti, Russello, Russetti, Russino, Russiani, Rossoni, Rossetti, Roussini, Rosselino, Rossato, Della Rossa, DeRossi, De Rubeis, Russo, and Russetto. Such variations were often the result of changes which occur in a language over the course of time and also because of differences in local dialects.

The ancient Italian region of Tuscany was settled in the third and fourth century B.C. by the Etruscans. It is from this historic and cultury important region that the surname Russo emerges. The region became known as Tuscia or Toscana and incorporated the regions north of Viterbo and Bolsena.

Excellent language basic course. However, as a child, I recall that Italians from the mainland would pronounce Locatelli as it looks, while Sicilians would say Locatell, dropping the last vowel. It seems like many final vowels were dropped. And "P" sounded like "B"; "C" sounded like "G" (gabbagole = Sicilian for cappacola)Are there any references to street pronunciation? Also, is there a tape course or software program available?

Thanks.

Great site good work, and great research and documentary and historical findings and true Sicilian language, if you can speak Spanish and Portuguese which sound s to me very vulgar, Sicilian sounds more to the point and not waste time, its unique language that should be study at university level why not people study languages that are not romantic.

Thanks for such a great website! You rock! I was so happy to find this site. I have been trying to get some sort of instruction in Sicilian but most of what I have found was either lacking or i didnt learn the way my learning style dictates. I grew up with Nonna, and my God parents speaking Parotti Di Agrigento, but talked back to them in English After many years of being away from them I could hardly understand them when the spoke English let alone Dielect. I will also engage my children with the resources here. Thank you again!

Nino auguri,
I found this website by accident and and I am extremely exited about it. My father was born and spent his first 9 years in Grammichele, Sicily before coming to America in 1947. My mother was born in America and is of Italian descent but we don't hold that against her. My wife is Sicilian and we both both just visited Bedda Sicilia. Her mother is from Palermo and her father Bagheria.

It was an eye opening experience for me and fell in love with the island and its people. I am teaching myself both Italian and Sicilian and have just joined Arba Sicula to further increase my knowledge of Sicily and the language of my father. Thank you for this incredible web site. I'm sure it gives all of us, that are searching for our roots, hope for the future of all of our families. I intend to teach my children both Sicilan and Italian. Grazii Steve Grosso AH, IL

Nino, Brava! What a wonderful site. My mother was born in Porticello, Provincia di Palermo. I remember her speaking Sicilian with her parents, but she now has lost almost all of her Sicilian. It's a terrible pity, since I would love to learn, since she is 75 and I want very much to pass a knowledge of the language on to my children some day.

Dad said his father and mother were from a town called Real Monte in Palermo. Grandmother's maiden name was Tuttulimondo and her father was the mayor (?) of the town in the early 1900's. If anyone has more info, please let me know.

My father is Irish and mother is Sicilian. I have been wanting to learn more on my families history and in part where my heritage begins. I came upon your site through surfing the net and I wanted to tell you how wonderful this site is. While reading through it all I learned things I didn't know, things that brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. In all, I found things that make me even more proud of my heritage. I have always told myself I wanted to learn the language, and starting tomorrow I will. Thank you. Respectfully, Michael Ray

Salve Nino,
I am second generation Sicilian born in USA. My grandmother Concetta(Drago) Sollecito came from Siracusa by boat to Ellis Island in 1908 along with my great grandmother Carmella Drago and my two uncles Joseph and Frank. My grandfather, Andrea Sollecito, came to America with the Merchant Marines and after 3 years he sent for my grandmother, the two children, her mother and her sister.

I do not speak Italian or Sicilian. I would like to visit Siracusa in May 2004 for one month and to locate my ancesters property address and the cemetary that my great, great grandparents (Drago and Sollecito) are buried. The eight children born in the US were not allowed to speak Sicilian; therefore, my mother did not speak. This makes me very sad and now I would like to learn. This is a wonderful website and it has brought tears to my eyes and I thank you very much. Linda (Sollecito/Troiano) Engel

Hi I'm a portorican that lived in Sicily for five years, 1983-88, my husband worked of the Naval Station Sigonella, Provincia di Catania. Three years ago I went back with my daughters, a misted a lot. Living in Sicily a fill like for some strange reason this happen to me. I never forget Sicily, thanks for having this. Sicilian are different and I learned that there is more than the back history of Sicily, is a beautiful country, with a history, monuments, good food, beaches, and the people. I can keep writing. A a piece of my heart still there and here in my soul. I will like to go back for vacations. I love my country Puerto Rico but Sicily is my second home.

With a lot of love and sadness in my deep feelings. Sincerely, Ada

I just came across your website and I have found it extreme-ly interesting. I am 49 years of age and of Sicilian ances-try -my grandparents came from Trapani and Palermo- with pa-ternal surnames of Di Giovanni and Lo Vecchio and maternal surnames of D'Agostino and De Lopez (from Spain).

I speak the Italian Language fairly well but I do not speak Sicilian. I would like to learn. In your opinion what books
would you recommend in learning the Sicilian language.

Thank you.

Very good job of writing in Sicilian. I was surprised that it was so close to the dialect I grew up with, as I know that there are several regional diallects within Sicily. I'm guessing you are from the Messina area.

Great webpage. I don't have any vested interests but I would like to tell everyone about a Sicilian website where you can buy cookies from Sicily. They specialize in almond cookies (Dolce di Mandorle). Even with the cost of shipping they are still reasonable and they arrive in a fresh condition. Allow 10 to 14 days for delivery. They make an excellent gift and they are delicious:
